English

at St Luke's CE Primary School

Our curriculum is designed so that our pupils acquire the key skills, understanding and knowledge in English so that they can access material in all curriculum areas, and provide a foundation for their learning throughout their school career and become lifelong learners. To achieve this, we are focused on making English interesting, exciting and purposeful by engaging the pupils with the joy and wonder of books and capturing their imagination. The acquisition of language skills is important for our children so they are able to communicate creatively and imaginatively in all curriculum areas, preparing them for the future. We understand English is an essential tool for life and our aims are to ensure that every child becomes a reader, writer and confident speaker.

Aims

The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

The national curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for writing and spoken language.
  • appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage!
  • write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
  • use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas.
  • are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.
